You’ve heard about blogging for a long time now and you want to finally get into the blogging world.
Now you’re wondering, “Where do I start?”
I was at this point once too so I have created the ultimate guide on how to create an awesome blog!
Now what the heck is hosting and why do I need it? Isn’t there plenty of free blogging websites I can just use?
To answer your question, yes, you can use those free sites.
However, if you’re wanting to turn this blog into anything that you can use to make money with then you need to have hosting.
Think of it this way.
You have a small jar and you slowly over time fill it with water, soon, it’s full and you can’t add any more water to that jar.
Hosting is like upgrading to a bigger jar, meaning you can have more site traffic without it filling.
Also, and most importantly, by getting hosting you now own your own website.
Why is this important?
Say you have a free blog for a long time and you’ve put so much work into it. Now suddenly, you go on your blog and it’s gone.
All that hard work is gone and deleted and there’s not a thing you can do about it. Sucks huh?
that’s why having your own website matters because once you get going on this and are wanting to make money so have to make sure that someone can’t just come along and delete your blog.
Now, with that being said, what hosting should you use?
There are so many different hosting sites you can use and they each have their own promises and benefits.
However, I recommend BlueHost for hosting as it gives you a bigger jar to hold more traffic without it slowing down.
Plus it’s really easy to use and comes with awesome customer service. There’s also a super simple way to add WordPress to your BlueHost site.
You can get a free domain name, which is the name of your site, through BlueHost. Find BlueHost Here.
How do I sign up?
Simple, click the link above there for BlueHost and then go through the easy steps.
First, you have to choose what plan you want. The long the plan, the cheaper it is in the long run.
Also, another bonus to BlueHost is if you choose sometime in the future that blogging just isn’t for you then you can cancel it and get a refund.
Here’s what the screen will look like.
Get A Domain Name.
What the heck is a domain name and why do I need one?
A domain name is the identity of your new blog, kind of like a fingerprint. It is unique to your blog and you must have one.
It is how people will find you on the massive web and they’ll even be able to search for your web address/domain name.
Have you ever sent someone a link? The link you sent them is that website’s domain name and their identity.
See that BlueHost link up above this? That’s a domain name.
Now that we’ve got that all figured out, how do you choose one?
Well, that can sometimes be the hardest part as it depends on what you want to blog about and what your niche is.
If you want to speak about your life and share tips on things, known as a Lifestyle Blogger, then you’d choose something that reflects that.
Such as, “Jenny’s POV.” Or something along those lines. Try to think on the name a little and make sure you’re happy with it.
Once you think you have something you’ll then put it into the “New Domain” Box.
Sweet, you’re almost there!
Well, WordPress is a giant in the blogging world and it powers 27% of the internet. Wow!
It is a highly used and highly recommended website to use when Blogging. I myself am using it as we speak!
It comes with many different features and allows you to fully express yourself and freely edit your blog.
It is rather easy to use once you get the hang of it and if you get WordPress through Bluehost, you automatically get WordPress.Org.
Why is WordPress.org so great?
It allows you to fully customize it and also it allows you to add ads to it and make money, which is what we want right?
WordPress.com doesn’t allow this and is more for just a personal blog to share with your family.
Now WordPress.com is free but it is limited.
WordPress.org does cost money but if you go through Bluehost the cost is already included and you’re all ready to go. Easy!
How do I install WordPress?
BlueHost makes it easy to install WordPress and practically does it for you.
You should be directed to BlueHost after you sign up and you should see a large “Install WordPress.” Button, or something along those lines.
If not, then hover over the “Hosting.” Button and find the “CPanel.”
From there you should see the “Install WordPress” Button.
Once you click the “Cpanel” Button then it will take you to something that looks like this.
Click the “Install WordPress.” Button and it should start the install.
Great! You’re on your way!
Getting a Blog Theme.
What is a theme and why do I need one?
A theme on a blog is what you see when you click onto a website. When you clicked onto my Blog, the theme is the first thing you saw.
How the posts sat on my blog and how the featured image, otherwise known as a header, sat on the page.
See how everything looks and how you can navigate through my blog? That is the themes job.
Now, there are many different themes to choose from. Some free and some not.
How do you choose?
Well, it again just reflects on what your blog is about and how you want it to look. If you’re a Lifestyle blogger then maybe you’d want it to feature many options to add photos and categories.
How do you get to the themes? It’s all so confusing!
Calm down, every blogger has been where you are now. Breathe!
Here’s how you can get to the themes from your new blog.
From your toolbar, you just go down to the spot where it says “Appearance” and hover over it then click “Themes.”
This is what you should see from here.
Now you can choose one of these themes or you can click the “Add New theme” Button and browse others as well.
Once you choose which one you want you then click onto it and click the button that says, “Activate.”
Once you’ve activated it, you’re on your way to creating an awesome blog!
Create an about me section.
Why do you need this?
Have you ever clicked onto a website and read through their page and really felt a connection to them?
We want your readers to feel that same connection to you and we want them to want to read more from you.
We can do this by introducing ourselves to your readers with an about me page.
How do we create one?
Well, you start by making a page for your About Me section.
From here, you want to click the “Add New” Button.
You’ll be taken to a blank page that you must name and fill in, such as like this.
Then you’ll want to publish it.
From there you’ll go to Appearance, like so.
Then you’ll click the “Menu.” Button.
You should be seeing you new page you just created, like this.
From here, you’ll want to put a check mark onto the “About me” Page by clicking it.
Then you’ll want to check the, “Add to menu” Button. It should bounce over to the Menu Structure spot, like the above.
Now, you can repeat this with a “Home” option as well. You just have to use the “Custom Link” Section.
You just copy the link from the search bar at the top of your page. Like this,
Then you’ll want to paste that into the custom link section.
Now you can drag them around to the order you prefer.
Make sure you’ve got the display location set, which is just below your menu structure.
From here, make sure to save your progress.
Install Some Plugins!
Now comes the fun part!
This is where you can add all the awesome things you’ve seen other blogs have. You’ll want to add some Social Media button to your blog so people can share your future posts.
How do we do that?
We want to scroll down your toolbar until you find the “Plugin” Option.
Click the “Add new” Button.
You should see something like this:
You should install “JetPack By WordPress” as it will show your site stats and how many people have visited your site.
You install a plugin by clicking on it and clicking the “Activate” Button.
Where it says “Latest version installed” is where the activate button would be but I already have this installed.
Now I recommend you get some social media buttons so we’re going to search up “Social Pug.”
Just like before, we’re going to click it and activate it.
Now we have to add the social buttons so they float along your page.
We’ll do that by going to your toolbar and scrolling down until we see “Social Pug.”
We’re going to click on the “Floating Sidebar” Button.
It should look something like this.
Now click on the “Select Networks” button and choose whatever social media you wish to have on your blog and then click the save changes.
Congratulations, you’ve just added a plugin!
Now a very important plugin to add is Yoast SEO.
Because it helps you rank in searches. Why is this important?
When you search anything on the internet, it goes through this ranking system and finds the most relevant things related to what you searched.
Yoast SEO helps you become ranked and gets you into the eyes of people searching for what you wrote.
Again, we’re going to search for new plugins like we did before.
Click the “Activate” button and there, you now have Yoast SEO installed!
Now here’s a nice guide on How To Set-up Yoast SEO.
I also recommend some security to your blog so hackers can’t get in so for this I recommend you to get “WordFence.”
This is another plugin and you add it just as you did before.
Create a header.
If your theme allows it then you can create a header.
What is a header?
It’s like the featured image to your blog and it’s like a welcome mat for your readers.
How do we create a header?
Go to your toolbar and scroll down until we see the “Appearance” button. We’re going to hover over that and click the “Header” button.
From there, it should look something like this.
Click the “Header Image” and you can then customize it.
You also have to customize your “Site Identity.”
What is my site identity?
It is what will introduce your readers to your blog.
Once you save that then you’re almost done! (Click the X to get out of this part once you’ve saved it.)
What are widgets and why do I need them?
They are kind of like little accessories for your blog and they rest on the side of your blog.
You use them to add categories, ads, and other things to it. They are helpful little beasts.
How to get to the widgets.
You’ll want to scroll down to your toolbar and hover over the “Appearance” Button and then click the “Widget” from there.
You should be seeing all of the available widgets for your use.
You can create a text post or you can add a widget as per the instructions for the “Available Widgets” on the photo above.
Publish your first post!
Now it’s time to publish your very first post! How exciting!
From here you’ll want to click the “+New” at the top of your page.
Click the “post” Button and you’ll be taken to a blank page.
You have to create a title for your post and then fill it in.
You can also add photos to your blog post by clicking the “Add Media” button at the top there.
You’ll be guided into a little pop-up menu where you can either drag files into it or upload them from your computer.
You can use free sites like Pixabay.com for free photos to use on your blog. You don’t have to credit them and it’s not copyrighted.
You can use Canva.com to edit those photos. It’s another free site that allows you to create layouts for your images.
I use and recommend both and that is what I use to create the images for my own blog posts.
From here, you’ve just created your very first blog post!
If this helped you then please share it with others so that it may help them as well!
Please let me know if this helped you and what other kind of content you would like to see in the future!
